Reflash the brick with real autonomy
LEGO Mindstorms and Technic hubs are already half-robot — motors, sensors, and a programmable brick in a modular package. The stock app limits you to drag-and-drop blocks. Reflash the hub with MicroPython, and you get real programming: PID control, sensor fusion, autonomous decision-making, and competition-ready behaviors.
This is the perfect bridge between toy robotics and real engineering. The LEGO hardware is rock-solid; the custom firmware unlocks its full potential.
The kit includes the flashing tools and sensor add-ons. You supply:
Flashing cable, additional sensors, custom firmware, and competition chassis plans. Unlock your LEGO hub's full potential with real programming.
$20 Get the BYOB KitYou're replacing the stock firmware with Pybricks or raw MicroPython, then building a competition chassis and programming autonomous behaviors. The LEGO hardware handles the mechanics; you handle the intelligence.
Connect the hub to your computer via the USB flashing cable. Use the Pybricks firmware installer (pybricks.com) or the raw MicroPython image included in the kit. The process takes about 2 minutes and is fully reversible — you can always restore stock firmware.
After flashing, the hub boots into a MicroPython REPL. You can type commands directly or upload scripts via Bluetooth.
Follow the competition chassis plans or design your own. The key requirements: two driven wheels with independent motor control (for tank steering), a castor or ball wheel for stability, and mounting points for sensors at the front. Keep the center of gravity low for sumo competition.
Start with line following: read the color sensor, PID-correct steering to stay on the line. Graduate to maze solving: use the ultrasonic sensor for wall detection, implement a left-hand or right-hand rule. For sumo: detect the ring edge with the color sensor, hunt for the opponent with ultrasonic.
from pybricks.pupdevices import Motor, ColorSensor, UltrasonicSensor from pybricks.parameters import Port left = Motor(Port.A) right = Motor(Port.B) # PID line follower # ... full implementation in project files
Combine multiple sensor inputs for smarter behavior. The color sensor reads the ground, the ultrasonic sensor reads ahead, and the hub's built-in IMU provides heading and acceleration. Fuse these inputs to build a robot that navigates reliably in unpredictable environments.
Competition categories: line following (fastest lap), maze solving (shortest time), and sumo (push opponent off ring). Each requires different chassis designs and software strategies. The project files include starter code for all three, plus a calibration routine for consistent sensor readings.
